My Tips: Buying banknotes and coins online

This is my tips for anyone out there who want to buy banknotes and coins in lelong.com.my. When buying for banknote or coins online, there are some things you need to consider. Please take note, that this is only my experience on buying and selling banknotes online via www.lelong.com.my.

1. Banknote and coin Seller.

Does the seller have a good rating?

Good rating here mean that the seller has at least over 30 people buying his/her item and give them good rating. Why 30 people? Because some online seller likes to fake the rating by buying their own item using other ID. Make sure that the item they sale or given rating is banknotes and coins and not a same item for different ID. If can, please do not buy from unverified member.

Has any of your friend give rating to the seller?

If yes, asked your friend who give rating to the seller about How Good the Seller on their last deal. Asked if the grading is good or not, How many days seller send the items after payment has been completed? Do Seller take care of the packaging? What posting method does Seller used? How good the seller grading for his/her item?

Browse the Website forum to know if people has been complaining about the seller before.

The Website Forum is a good tool to know if the seller is not very good on completed his/her business online. If you are buying over RM300 items, do search in forum about the seller. Log in to the forum and type his/her name in search.

How long has the seller been doing sales online and how many repeated customer?

You also need to check how longs the seller has been doing business online. The seller maybe do not have many good rating but Seller got Many repeated buyer. This show that the seller has been giving a good service before.

Read the seller terms and condition

Whatever item you buy via online please read the terms and condition first. Some seller do not let buyer do combine Shipping charges, do not give warranty for the item, will only reply via sms or e-mail etc. Please check their terms and condition before buying online.

2. Banknote and Coin that you want to buy

Do the seller give front and back view of the item?

The picture that the seller put in his/her auction, do Seller give front and back view? Do the picture crisps and clear? Is the picture big enough for you to view them? If not do not buy the item because the picture maybe has been polished by software.

Do Seller put clearly what the item grade?

New banknote and coin seller do not put the item grade on their posting. Please make sure Seller put the grade of the item clearly so you do not buy an overprice item. If they do not put grade, asked the condition of the item via e-mail or phone. If they do not give good reply better do not buy.

3. Check offline price of the item

Please check your catalogue (STANDARD CATALOGUE OF MALAYSIA SINGAPORE, BRUNEI BOOK OF COIN AND PAPER MONEY - By Steven Tan), the price of the item you want to buy. Some price of the item in catalogue not a real market price though. Some very hard to find item is been put at a lower price then the market price. Do go out and buy from your local banknotes and coins shops frequently so you will know the accurate price.

4. Start buying cheap item

If you are newbie better start by buying cheap item first. This is to make sure you do not get cheated big time buy irresponsible seller or conman. Just remember, an believable cheap price normally something you need to get away from. Do not tempted on buying only because the item is cheap.

5. Shipping charges

Some Seller does put a high shipping charges and do not allowed combine shipping charges for their item. Before you click the bid button, better check for the shipping charges. E-mail seller if you are not sure about them. Check other seller charges, do people normally charge that much?

6. Please communicate

Online selling is about communicating via online among buyer and seller. If you as a buyer do not do the communication you will most probably the one who will be lost with your deal. The best choice of communication for buying item online is e-mail. If there is any dispute, you can check and send them online easily.
