Selamat Hari Merdeka 2011

Its that time of the year again that we celebrate our Merdeka celebration but this year, Our National Merdeka Celebration will be postponed due to Hari Raya Celebration that fall on the same day as Merdeka. The 54 years Merdeka Celebration will be held on 16 September 2011 at Dataran Merdeka Kuala Lumpur. Once again, I want to wish "Selamat Hari Merdeka 2011" to all my Malaysian readers and friends. You can read about Malaysia Merdeka coins at my old post: Selamat Hari Merdeka Coins. If you're looking for Malaysia Merdeka logo and Malaysia flag, you can go to my post Malaysia Merdeka 2011. This year Merdeka Theme is "1 Malaysia, Transformation Success, People Peace".

Merdeka 2011 coin

If any of you remember our country history lesson, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, who led a delegation of ministers and political leaders of Malaya in negotiations with the British in London for Merdeka, or independence along with the first president of the Malayan Chinese Association (MCA) Tun Dato Sir Tan Cheng Lock and fifth President of Malaysian Indian Congress Tun V.T. Sambanthan. On 31 August 1957, history of this country began, Malaysia gain independence at Stadium Merdeka (Independence Stadium), in Kuala Lumpur with Tunku Abdul Rahman Shouting "Merdeka!" and everyone share the same joy of independence.

This year Merdeka will be a little bit difference. We can read many news and story how Malaysia unity has changed. Hopefully it will not be any worst in the near future. Nowadays we maybe shouting the same word "Merdeka!" but at the same time deep in some of our hearts, they're dissatisfaction. It hurt when some Malaysian start to praise communist as Malaysia Independence heroes. Malaysian do stupid stuff in the name of politic.

"Selamat Hari Merdeka Malaysia!"

Wish this country unity will keep on stronger every seconds and we can keep living in harmony on the coming years.

Jailed 5 years for 31 fake notes

Jailed 5 years for 31 fake notes? Is it worth it? I am reading Star newspaper yesterday and found a news about a guy in JB had been convicted guilt for a possession of 31 pieces of counterfeit RM100 notes. Its not reported if he got the fake notes from the stolen cars but if it does, it is a big mistake in his life. I already advice everyone, If you found a fake Malaysia banknote, report it to the police or you will need to pay criminal attorney later because of a small sum of money.

JOHOR BARU: The Sessions Court here sentenced a 27-year-old man to five years’ imprisonment for possession of 31 pieces of counterfeit RM100 notes. Low Wei Loong committed the offence in Jalan Mutiara Emas Utama, Taman Mount Austin at around 4.30am on May 10. The RM100 notes were found in his wallet. He was charged under Section 489C of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years. He was previously sentenced to a year’s imprisonment by the magistrate court here on May 21 for stealing a car. Sessions Judge Mohd Nasir Nordin sentenced Low to five years from the date of arrest. Deputy Public Prosecutor Dzul Iswari Mohd Jaafar prosecuted while the accused was not represented.

How about people who collect/keep counterfeit banknotes? Do they need an attorney too? What do you think?

How to detect online Seller Fraud?

Do you know How to detect online Seller Fraud? I had received many email from online buyer who are frustrated with their online trading experience in Malaysia especially in Mudah.my and Facebook. Many of them told me that they find a high quality banknote/coins selling at a cheap price in Mudah.my. Many newbies buyer don't know that they're many scammer/fraudster out there who put their item at a cheap price as a bait. Most of them don't have the actual item (just a pictures that they found in Internet. Some even do counterfeit coin photo) and some of them will only send less valuable banknotes/coins to you.

How to detect Fraud online Seller:

1. If the price is too good to be true, try avoiding dealing with the seller. Unless he or she want to do Cash on Delivery (COD) with you. When you meet the seller, make sure you prepare your knowledge on how to check the genuine banknote/coin. If you want to start buying, I suggest you should learn the market price first. Buy a good books/Catalogue like Steven Tan Book or KN Boon Book. It is a must if you really serious in collecting coins and banknotes.

2. Do some investigation about the seller. Its hard to know if the seller in Mudah.my is genuine seller or fraudster since Mudah.my don't have any feedback system. Its a scammer heaven but a hell for buyer who had been cheated by them. You can try do some little investigation yourself to make sure if the seller is genuine or scammer:

i. Search his phone number or email+scam (or any words related) in Google. This will help you find any information about their details. If they had scam people before, their phone number will be pop-up in some websites/forums or blogs.
ii. After you confirm that you want to buy their item, seller normally will send you their name and Maybank account number, again, please Google and search for his account details in internet.

3. Asked in forum or join a Facebook groups that is related to your transaction if the seller is genuine or had been involving with fraud before. For Malaysia coin collecting, you can try this pages Kelab Pengumpul duit lama dan negara asing. Look for active pages or groups. Some groups or pages might had been stop active since their admin maybe had been busy.

4. If that seller are selling banknotes, try search the serial numbers of the notes in Google. Some of them just copy and using any pictures they can find online. If they're selling coins, it will be hard to trace but you can try search in Google the coins/sales title.

5. If you're newbies in online buying, always buy a cheaper banknote/coin first. Buying online is not like buying with your coin dealer in Amcorp mall. You cannot get hold of the item. What you see are only pictures.

I am also planning to compile a list of trusted sellers that I had been dealing with since 2003 and sellers who I know are genuine online seller. Hopefully, the list will help new online buyer from get cheated by online fraudster. I need help on compiling that list. You can email me at lunaticg@gmail.com if you want to suggest any Malaysian Banknote/Coin Online Sellers in the list. Online trading will be easy and fun if you know how to do it.

Holiday

Not only me but most of Malaysian is dragging themselves to office this morning. hahaha

Yup! long long weekend coming.

Yesterday I had movies marathon again.

This time watched 2 movies in a row.

Started with my choice 'Rising of the planet of the apes' and 'Cowboy and Aliens' which is my friend's choice.

I don't really favor Cowboy movie.

For me they are dirty! dusty! and yucky for me....

That apes movie is an eye opener and make us realize we are not the only intelligent with feeling species in this planet.

Conclude my Sunday with lots of good food to eat.

Starting with sweet cherries for appetizer,  then have a nice Penang Nasi Lemak with my favourite spicy fish and sweet potato fitters as my dessert. Well not really a dessert but snacks. hehehe...

Thank you God for giving me good food to eat.

Hope you could help and give food to the less fortunate too.

Hope through out this week I could achieve a lot in works too.

Still thinking..... Phuket or Koh Sa Mui for Christmas??

Phuket sounds great and have many activities to explore but Tsunami make me hesitate and chicken out!

Koh Sa Mui sounds boring!!!

What should I do???

Here are gambar duit syiling Malaysia or Malaysia coins pictures for anyone who are looking for pictures or photo of Malaysia coins. I also added duit baru Malaysia (Malaysia new coins) pictures that had been released by BNM (Bank Negara Malaysia) on end of July 2011. Looking at Malaysia coins history (Sejarah duit Malaysia), BNM change Malaysia new coins after over 20 years. In this post, I am sharing Malaysia coin pictures from 1st to the new third series.

Duit Syiling Malaysia Siri Pertama

The first series of sen coins were introduced in 12 June 1967 in denominations of 1 sen, 5 sen, 10 sen, 20 sen, 50 sen, followed by the introduction of the 1 ringgit coin (which continued to use the $ symbol and is the largest coin in the series) in 1 May 1971. The first series coins are also called the Parliament series because of the parliament pictures on the reverse of the coins.

Duit Syiling Malaysia Siri Kedua.

The second series of coin for normal circulation was issued on 4 September 1989. The new design feature Malaysia national flower, the Bunga Raya (hibiscus flower) on the reverse of the coins.

"Is it true that we can change old money at BNM and we will be able to get price higher than the value of the currency? For example, RM50 merdeka, I will be able to get double the value? Some also said that a rare coins will get higher price if we change them at BNM? RM1 with national monument picture can be exchange for RM50 at Bank Negara? Can you help and give explanation?"-English.

I had been receiving many questions about this matters since I start this blog in 2008. I don't know where this rumors come from but it keep on coming in my mailbox. Its just a myth that you can get a high value if you change your old ringgit banknotes or coins at BNM. You can only get face value if you change any kind of money at any bank. BNM (Bank Negara Malaysia) is a body/bank to issue Malaysia currency and safeguarding the value of our currency. They're not business entity who buy and sell currency.

Maybe the rumours came from people who exchange their old money with banknote and coin collectors but not every old money will give you high value. A 1 sen 1971 coin will only get you a value of 1 sen since many collectors don't want to buy them. You can read about Malaysia old coins value here; nilai duit lama Malaysia. For coins that Malaysian collectors consider as a rare coins, you can read this post; Malaysia Rare Coins List. Most of the time, I advice my readers to sell the coins themself if they want a higher price. This is because selling them to coin dealers will only give you at least 50% or lower then market value. You can try sell them online at eBay or Mudah.my, just read my post on How to sell coins.

You can also change your old RM500 or RM1000 at BNM but they will only give you face value. Selling them to a collector will get you a higher price then the face value.

Scolding

I suppose to sing 'Its Friday! Friday!

But huh... early morning I am scolding my staff like mad woman.

Bark and bark but she seem like don't repent at all.

I have been trying to teach her for so long.

Wasted my energy.

I talked to her.

I taught her personally.

But this morning her mistake was really unforgiven.

Careless mistake which reflected badly towards the company.

I could not talk to her nicely and baby sit her like my 7 years old kid anymore (like I have one!)

I believe I am out of patience to teach her anymore.

The teacher - remind the pupil the same thing over and over again

The pupil - keep repeating the same mistake again and again and this seems not ending at all

Seriously she don't leave me no choice at all but to scold her with hope she could remember this day and will not repeat the same mistake again.

Ah ! honestly I feel bad after scolding people.

What you want me to do this younger generation need to fall and hurt to learn things.

Poor girl. Hope she could find good man and get married soonest.

Working here is not for her.

Anyway told her I am giving her one last chance to proof she is going to change.

We shall see this.

Hope this will not spoil my whole day mood.

Philippines Peso notes authentication levels

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) last year has released a New Generation Currency (NGC), P20, P50, P100, P200, P500, and P1,000; all have new designs and security features. Philippines NGC printed with Bioguard technology by Arjowiggins. Bioguard produces banknotes that are treated to prevent bacteria from multiplying. The anti-bacterial property has been tested to resist washing and will last throughout the lifetime of the banknote. Do you know that BSP has incorporated security features that allow for four levels of authentication?

Philippines Peso notes authentication levels:

(1) Level I: Security features which can be easily recognized by the public without the use of special instrument. These are the “look, feel, tilt” elements in the notes such as watermark, security thread, and security fibers.

(2) Level II: Security features recognizable by professional cash handlers or bank tellers with the use of magnifying lens or ultraviolet light. Examples are fluoro-phosphorescent features, security fibers, and microprinting.

(3) Level III: The hidden or covert security features reserved for the use of Bangko Sentral.

(4) Level IV: Forensic security features for the use of law enforcers in testifying whether a banknote is genuine or counterfeit. These are detectable at specialized laboratories.

The central bank presented these authentication methods as it launched the new currency generation of P20, P50, P100, P200, P500 and P1, 000 banknotes around Western Visayas recently. An example of these security features are the embossed prints of the words “Republika ng Pilipinas” and “Sanlibong Piso” on the P1,000 bill that can be detected by the “feel” method. BSP said the public will benefit from the security features of the new currency as they will be protected from receiving fake money.

Tensho Oban for auction

Tensho Oban for auction by Heritage Auctions on 9 September 2011. The Tensho Naga Gold Oban - Omodaka variety ND (1573-1591), one of the rarest of all Oban varieties. The Tensho Oban weight was fixed at about 165 grams and was hammered into three different sizes. This example is the 'NAGA' (or long type) and the largest physical size of all the Obans minted. The estimate price for this auction are $300,000 - $350,000.

This is an extremely rare variety of the Tensho Naga Oban due to the different upper stamp of the two stamps on the reverse: the Omodaka stamp. The Mori family was given permission by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (the great uniter of Japan) to make this official Oban and stamp the symbol of the their family on the reverse, which was the Omodaka plant leaf and flower. The large gold coin plate minted in 73% gold and 27% silver. The ink is original and a vibrant black color. There is scuffing on the high points of the obverse with a small amount of ink missing. Repair apparent on both sides at 8 o'clock on the obverse, and at the matching area on the reverse at 4 o'clock, as evidenced by the disturbance of the original texture of the surfaces near the edge. The repair seems to have been done over a hundred years ago and carefully hammered after perhaps being dropped.

Oban were made of hammered gold with a face value of 10 ryo or 10 Koban coins. The word Oban means 'large stamped' in Japanese. The earliest ōban were made in the 1580s, when the feudal lord Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536/7-98) co-operated with wealthy merchants in the Kansai district of central Japan and monopolized Japan's metal mines. He then began to mint gold coins of fixed quality.

The auction will take place at Long Beach, California or you can bid it online at: The Tensho Naga Gold Oban.

First Floating Commemoration

World’s first floating commemoration to mark the 500th anniversary of the maiden voyage of the Mary Rose revealed by Royal Mint early this month. A replica of the Mary Rose £2 coin was put on the ship resting place in the Solent. The ship was launched in 1511 and sank in 1545 during an engagement with French fleet. The three meter replica coin is a reproduction of the £2 Mary Rose coin released by the Royal Mint earlier this year.

Shane Bissett, the Royal Mint’s Director of Commemorative Coin commented "We produced the Mary Rose coin as a tribute to the world’s only surviving Tudor warship – and hope it serves as a reminder of Britain’s rich heritage as a maritime nation. In our 1,000-year history, we have never ‘floated’ a coin before, but there seemed no better way to celebrate the 500th anniversary of such an iconic vessel. Collaborating with the Mary Rose Trust and the Royal Navy Fleet Diving Squadron to execute the idea at sea was an honor, as we remember our naval past and look to its future."

John Lippiett, Chief Executive of the Mary Rose Trust said "We are delighted to continue our relationship with the Royal Mint following production of the Mary Rose £2 coin. We have much work to do to secure the future of the ship and we are grateful to everyone who supports our fundraising drive to help us build the new Mary Rose Museum here in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Building work is underway and we plan to open it before the end of 2012. Our hope is that people will send a Mary Rose £2 coin back to us here in Portsmouth to help us achieve our target."

Lieutenant Commander Richard Watson, Chief of Staff at the Royal Navy Fleet Diving Squadron added "Not only does the Mary Rose play an important part in Britain’s military history, but the story of this Tudor warship appeals to naval personnel and civilians alike. We were able to combine some of our training with this task and are proud to help the Royal Mint commemorate the Mary Rose and hope that the new £2 coin helps keep her memory alive."

The Mary Rose £2 gold proof coin will find its way into our change this year. Only 1,511 22 carat gold commemorative coin have been struck, reflecting the year of the Mary Rose’s maiden voyage. The coins have also been struck in sterling silver and pristine, uncirculated versions are available to buy in limited numbers.

Mary Rose £2 Gold Proof Coin

The reverse features an intricately detailed depiction of the Mary Rose that was inspired by the only known contemporary painting of her. It was created by John Bergdahl FRBS who explains: ‘After a trip to the museum currently the home to the Mary Rose, I was immediately inspired by the only acknowledged painting of this iconic vessel – an image that I used as the basis for my design.’

Where to change old ringgit?

Do you know where to change old ringgit? A friend of mine argue with me, "I heard Bank Negara Malaysia will Interrogate you for hours if you want to exchange your old RM500 or RM1000 banknotes". I don't believe what he said and try to exchange my old notes to experience it myself. BNM statement on 12 September 1998, announced the demonetisation of the RM500 and RM1,000 notes, and they ceased to be legal tender from July 1, 1999. The statement said the volume of both the RM500 and RM1,000 notes in circulation before the move stood at 1,989,479 and 4,523,731 pieces respectively.

After arriving at BNM, I go straight to "Kaunter Penukaran Wang" (BNM Money Exchange Counter) and said I want to change my old RM500 notes to the ladies who work there. He give me the above form and asked me to fill the necessary details. They're nothing much on that form, only the part asking you "why you don't exchange the notes earlier" a little bit interesting. After filing up the form I send it back to the counter. They asked for my Identity Card (kad pengenalan) and told me to wait for a while. 15 minutes later they called me and exchange my old ringgit with 5 pieces of new RM100. There is no interrogation going on as told by my friends.

Question and answer about Malaysia old ringgit exchange at BNM:

Do you get full value of your RM500 or RM1000 notes?
Yes. BNM will give back full value of your banknotes. Some people suggest to change to Money Changers, they only give half of the value of the notes and told you that BNM will never received that banknote since it has been demonetizes.

Where can I change RM500 or RM1000 notes?
You can still change them to a smaller denomination at all Bank Negara Malaysia branches:

BNM has taken out the RM500 and RM1000 notes from circulation and withdrawn their legal tender status (“demonetised”) to complement the exchange control measures introduced in 1998.

Where can I exchange mutilated (duit rosak) banknotes?

Can I exchange new banknotes and coins at BNM branches?

BNM has stopped the service of exchanging new banknotes and coins since 1997. You can exchange new banknotes and coins at your banking institution (Maybank, CIMB, RHB, Alliance bank).
