Weird Sculpture

Seeing this bizarre sculpture left me wondering. I've found it while browsing some photos in the net. I really don't know if its half dog, half human or 1/4 cow, 1/4 dog and 1/2 human. I just can't figure it out. Out of curiosity, I've searched the net to seek an answer. Well, this masterpiece is created by the artist Patricia Piccinini and was named "the Young Family". This is just one of her many sculptures. I was intrigued by her artistry so I would like to share some more of her creations and since I have nothing "odd news" to blog about right now, I thought maybe, this one will do. So here it goes:

The artist, Patricia Piccinini, revolves in the concept of exploring what is 'natural' in the digital age. She deeply puts a personal perspective in her craft. She pursued an interest in the human form and explored potential ways to manipulate and enhance it thru bio-technical intervention. From mapping of the human genome up to the growth of human tissue and organs from stem cells, she had created real works of art. No wonder her sculptures truly reveals her passion.

FATHER'S DAY

This post is dedicated to all the dads around the world! (specially to my Papa and my Ba).

What Makes a Dad?

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,

The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,

The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,

Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it ... Dad

Father's day trivia:
  • Sonora Louise Smart Dodd, of Spokane, Washington, started the tradition of Father's Day in the honor of her dad.
  • First local Father's Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington.
  • In 1916, US President Woodrow Wilson approved the idea of observing an annual Father's Day.
  • In1924, President Calvin Coolidge made Father's Day a national event.
  • In 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day.
  • Father's Day is the fifth most popular card-sending holiday, with an estimated $100 million in card sales. Husbands, grandfathers, uncles, sons and sons-in-law are honored as well as father.
  • The Grim Reaper is known as "father time".
  • The word "Dad" dates back to the sixteenth century, or possibly even earlier? It may have originated with the Welsh word "Tad" (meaning father), which later mutated to Dad. The word "Father" is derived from the Old English "Foeder".

'UNICORN ' Deer

The myth about 'Unicorns' must've rooted from this kind of animal anomaly or genetic flaw. The photo above reveals a single-horned deer that was found in a reserve park in Rome, Italy. Looking at it will surely give you a glimpse of the much fabled, mythical Unicorn. But, scientifically speaking, it's a kind of genetic flaw or should we say a factory defect caused while it is still in its developmental stage or it could also be the result of a trauma in the animal's early life.

This one-year old deer was nicknamed 'Unicorn' and was said to be born in captivity in the research center's park in the Tuscan town of Prato, near Florence, Tozzi. Experts said that single-horned deers are rare but not unheard of, most especially the central positioning of the horn. Commonly, anomalies like this may cause the horn to grow just on one side rather being at the center. So, since Unicorn's horn is positioned exactly at the center portion of its head, its case is said to be complex.

Baby Born with Xtra Manhood

From all the birth anomalies I've known, the case of this little boy with extra penis on his back really distressed me. He was born to a Chinese farmer dad Li Jun and his wife, who lived in Hejian City in China's Henan Province.

Good thing that this little boy was brought to Tianjin Children's Hospital on May 27 to remove the extra penile growth on his back. This rare condition is called Fetus in Fetu, a developmental abnormality in which the fetus gets enveloped inside its twin and the entire living organ system, with torso and limbs, develops inside the host. This abnormality occurs to 1 in 500,000 live births.

After spending 3 hours in the operating room, doctors have successfully removed the extra penis. The little boy was fine after the surgery.

Born Twice?

Macie McCartney is a miracle baby - doctors saved her life, and along the way she was born twice.

If there is such term as prenatal repair, i think the case of Macie Hope MacCartney is the perfect example. She was born twice: at 6 months, she was removed from her mother's womb and returned after her tumor was successfully taken off.

At 6 months, close to being a fully developed baby, Doctors found out that she has a large tumor. This was discovered when her mother, Keri MacCartney, had gone for a routine ultrasound just to know the gender of the baby. However, what supposed to be an exciting moment became a frightening experience. The ultrasound revealed a massive tumor on the unborn baby. The tumor extends from her tailbone and was stealing the blood that she needed to live. According to doctors, if this condition is left untreated, it will surely kill the little girl before she will be born.

The team of surgeons, led by Dr. Kass, immediately decided to take the nerve racking operation of removing the baby to her mom's womb, remove the tumor, and return her again after all is done. During the operation, Keri was put into anesthesia, much deeper than usual so that her uterus would relax. Surgeons then exposed the uterus, cut where they would not damage the placenta, pulled most of the baby out and removed the tumor. They then had to ensure Keri's womb would hold amniotic fluid to keep the baby alive.Ten weeks later, May 3, 2008, Macie was born.

CAT POO COFFEE: the worlds most expensive coffee

If you are a coffee addict with a particularly refined taste buds, this is for you - the Cat Poo coffee that costs a mere £50. Imagine? that expensive? Well, the price only spells how exotic this coffee is. But more than that, producing it is already a hard work.

Internationally-renowned barista David Cooper created the coffee, which is a blend of Jamaican Blue Mountain and the exclusive Kopi Luwak bean.

Kopi Luwak, or Civet coffee, is made from beans eaten, partly digested, and then expelled by the Indonesian Civet cat.

Mr Cooper said: 'These rare coffees have been slowly hand roasted for around 12 minutes to ensure that we maximise the potential of each coffee.

'The final roast colour is quite dark to ensure that the espresso is perfect for a smooth latte or cappuccino.'

Civets, who live in the foliage of plantations across south east Asia, are said to pick the best and ripest coffee berries. Enzymes in their digestive system break down the flesh of the fruit before the animals expel the bean.

Workers collect beans from the plantation floor, wash away the dung and roast them.

All proceeds from the coffee sales are to be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support.
