No more Heritage Hotel Money Fair

U.S Agency recently told me, they will not held any Money and Stamp Fair at Heritage Station Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. This is because of high rental rates and the place currently doing some renovation work. You can find them every Saturday and Sunday at Amcorp Mall Flea market in Petaling Jaya. Mr. Govin from U.S Agency told me that they had stop doing fair at that place for many months now.

U.S Agency Dealing in Stamps, Coins, Banknotes, Miniature Sheets, Phone Cards in Malaysia, Singapore, China, Hong Kong & World. U.S Agency is based in Ipoh. You can find their shop at; No. 115, Jln Sultan Idris Shah, 30000 Ipoh, Perak. You can contact the owner Mr. Govin at phone number 012-5017775. They were actively involved in many money and stamp fair across Malaysia. For me, they were one of coin dealer who actively try to educate public on coin collecting.

Amcorp Mall flea market open on Saturday and Sunday; from 9.00 am until 5.00 pm. The flea market of Amcorp Mall located in the mall at the lower ground and the 1st floor. The Amcorp Mall is situated at Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. Located opposite the Taman Jaya LRT station which is served by the Kelana Jaya Line, operated by Rapid KL. It is also located in the proximity of the Petaling Jaya Hilton Hotel and the Armada Hotel. This is one of the flea market recommended by most collector for antique, coin, vintage and collectibles item.

19 september 2010 hunting trip

I am going back to Kota Kinabalu for the last Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Its been a busy two weeks holiday for me, I need to squeeze my coin hunting trip when I get a spare time. I want to say sorry to all of my coin collector friends in Kota Kinabalu because cannot meet all of you. Will try to make it next time. The only two place I get a chance to visit for coin hunting are Wisma Merdeka and Gaya Street Tamu. Gaya Street Tamu or Sunday Market is a must visit place if you ever go to Kota Kinabalu. Its open every Sunday starting from 6am until around 1 pm.

I am visiting Gaya Street Tamu on 19 September 2010. Its a short coin hunting trip since my flight back to Kuala Lumpur is on the same day. Gaya Street pack with people that day, mostly foreign tourist. I get a chance to visit Cikgu Chong but nothing that interest me on display that day. I try to find Michele. On my way to Michele stall, I found this new guy (Correct me if I am wrong). I don't get a chance talking with him since he got customer that time. I waited for 5 minutes but he still busy entertaining his customer. Or maybe I am invisible that day? I just take my pictures and go to Michele stall.

I think everyone of you still remember Michele, right? When I go there, no banknotes or coins that interesting for me to buy and keep. But her pressing irons on sell a little bit interesting for me. Normally she only display the normal charcoal irons. On that day, she got the flat sad iron, fuel liquid iron and another collectibles iron that I don't know what they called it. There is a metal iron in that pressing iron. All of that irons are heavy, at least weight 3 Kg a piece. I am not an antique pressing iron collector but its not easy to spot this kind of iron in Malaysia. I had seen the flat sad iron before but not the fuel liquid Iron and that other one. She is selling those irons for RM800 a piece. I don't know the market price of this collectibles but you can always bargain if you interested.

I don't buy anything that day. Just another unlucky hunting trip for me.

Summit usj flea market

I have been passing by this flea market few times but what I saw nothing much happen. There is not many people selling in this flea market unlike those in Amcorp Mall, Petaling Jaya. When I go there last Sunday, I saw something different in this flea market then its usual looks. I saw a seller putting his old Malaysia banknotes in a files folder. To anyone who maybe don't realize. There is a flea market held at 2nd floor of Summit USJ every Saturday and Sunday. It start at around 10am and closed around 9pm. The flea market is just below The GSC Cinema.

I meet with the seller, he introduced his name as Ng or Vincent. He is selling his collection of banknotes. What attract me is he putting this sheets of old 10 ringgit banknote. I touch it and look like it is a fake notes printed using normal printer. He should put specimen on the notes if he want to display it but never mind, no one will check. Mr. Ng have a vast collection of same number banknote. He claim that many Singaporean are looking for this kind of notes. the price is higher for Singaporean banknote and they still can negotiate if they buy Malaysian banknote.

The price can go up to RM6,000 for sought after number a pair. For everyone information, Its not solid number, just a pair of banknotes with same number. He said that one ringgit are the easiest to find due to so many of one ringgit in circulation. It is very hard to find Five ringgit polymer with the same number as other notes in his collection. From what I saw, no 5 ringgit polymer on sell by him that day.

I don't understand why people want to buy this same number notes? It isn't a solid number that is hard to find. But to me, if someone sell them, that most probably because someone collect them. If you're collector, you can contact Mr. Ng at his number 016-2863082.

Pasar Warisan Seremban

Its been a while I haven't post a story about flea market in here. Pasar Warisan Seremban or Some people prefer to called it pasar karat is conducted along Jalan Utam Singh, Seremban. It operates every weekend (Sunday) from 7.00 am to 5.00 pm. This flea market at Jalan Utam Singh has been opening since 1st May 2008. The previous Seremban flea market open at Jalan Lee Sam. This is my first hunting trip to this place after reading about it in Fazil Numismatic Blog.

I am not very familiar with Seremban and not much detail about this flea market in the Internet but I manage to find it after asking people around (near Seremban) for about one hour. The easiest ways to find this place are to look for Pasar Besar Seremban, Bank Simpanan Nasional or Maybank Seremban. If you're asking about Jalan Utam Singh or Pasar Karat, u most probably will be end up like me, received almost similar answer "tak tahu" (Don't know). Look like most people in Seremban don't know that this flea market even exist. Parking is not a big problem since not many people coming to this flea market. This market is under Seremban Municipal Council jurisdiction and Sunday is a free parking day.

This market are selling various items such as handicrafts, antiques, pottery, used computer, old books, flowers, bonsai, dry food, decorations, wall paintings and traditional herbs at reasonable prices. I can only spotted 5 people selling coins and banknotes at this place. Most of them is selling their item at a higher price. Some even higher then Kuala Lumpur market price. Only 2 person selling their items at a reasonable price and some nice items for people who hunting for collection like me. I manage to find, Terengganu old tin coin (its fake but I get them in a cheap price, will post the story later), 50 half dollar King Edward VII coin and 5 dollars King George Vi banknote sold for RM180. I don't manage to buy that green 5 dollars banknote because at the time when I spot it, the seller busy talking with other customer.

Other then that, most of item sell in this place are Malaysia coins & banknotes and some world coins. Some sellers do sell their item at a high price without any chance of bargaining. This flea market is not as good as Penang or Butterworth but still a worth place to visit for your hunting trip. Its just one and half hour drive from Kuala Lumpur. I will most probably making another trip to this place. Anyone of you have been to this pasar karat (Flea market) before?

Gaya street gong seller

On my vacations to Kota Kinabalu on November, I try to find Gaya street gong seller I have been talking about in my gaya street post. Kota Kinabalu tamu@Sunday market held along Gaya street, near the state library. Gaya street tamu open once a week on Sunday from 6am until 12pm. Gaya street tamu is one of the most go places for tourist since you can found so many local crafts and souvenir. You can also found so many discount hotels near gaya street.

From a website sabah.org.my, I found out that Gong is a backbone to almost every social event in Sabah. The gongs are found in all parts of the state and are highly valued. They are also used as bridewealth, for animistic religious ceremonies, signaling and during harvest festivals. The smaller musical instrument is a Kulintangan. The instrument consists of a set of about eight to nine small brass kettle gongs. Each sounds a different pitch when struck. The gongs are arranged horizontally in a row on a low wooden bed-like frame. The player sits down on the floor in front of the gongs and beats them with two small wooden mallets.

Kulintangan was first introduced into west Sabah by the Bruneis but it is also traditionally used by the Bajaus and some Dusun/Kadazan people. It is usually played on festive occasions, such as weddings and religious ceremonies, where it is often accompanied by other traditional gongs. You can hear the sound of this music in this video, almost a miles away when you pass by gaya street on sunday. The gong and kulintangan on sale here for as little as RM130 until over thousands ringgit depends on the quality and item used to make the instrument.

On my visit to gaya street on 15 november 2009, not so many coins and banknotes are on sale by this seller. Only a few foreign coins and paper money that not very valuable are on sale. Few years back, I remember this sellers bring so many north borneo coins and Sabah tokens. On my visit last, most of items on sale is Chinese ceramics from Song dynasty. I am not a fan of china dynasty porcelains but you can found Qingbai bowl, Ru ware, Ding ware and blue and white ware. The price is around RM200 until thousands of ringgit depending on the quality of the porcelain.

The owner is the old man wearing a white hat (kopiah putih); sorry, I forgot to asked his name and contact number. They will not be selling in this tamu, when Kota Belud (a town in Sabah famously known as the cowboy town) is having a tamu besar. He is also selling parang and keris, some of the traditional weapon in Sabah. If you going to Gaya Street Tamu, make sure you make a visit to this seller stall. He is buying his items from village people, most probably he will sell them at cheaper price then catalog. One of the seller that worth to look for when you visit this place.

Gaya Street tamu-Michelle

Many reader from Sabah asked me through e-mail, where to find old banknote and coin in Sabah? There is not so many coin dealer in Sabah. My answer will be try go to any Sabah tamu (flea market), you might get lucky and find some seller in there. Kota Kinabalu tamu@pasar minggu in Gaya street is situated in city center, near the state library. Gaya street tamu open once a week on Sunday from 6am until 12pm. On my last visit to Gaya street tamu on 15 November 2009, I meet michelle.

Michelle start her sale a bit late (no wonder I never saw her before), normally she will be in Gaya street Tamu at around 10.00 in the morning. Her stall is just near the Hong Leong bank. She doesn't have so many banknotes and coins for sale but her price is still a relief to your pocket. You still can negotiate her price. On my last visit to her stall, she have some British North Borneo and Melaka-Dutch VOC coin. You can also check what item is available by calling her at 016-8100918.

Most of her item are antiques vase and stones. She tell me that this vase is more then 1,000 years old. She also have some Chinese dynasty vase. Her price for banknote and coin can be a bit cheaper then standard catalog by Steven Tan but just remember to negotiate any deal to make sure you are buying your item cheaper. She is also the second women I have ever deal on buying my banknote and coins. The other women is an online seller in lelong.com.my.

To all my Sabahan reader, you still can find your precious collection on sale but it will take some more time to find them since not so many seller for coin and banknote there. If any of you collector out there, visited Sabah. Don't forget to visit Gaya street tamu on Sunday.

Amcorp Mall flea market-Collectibles Item

This is my 2nd post about Amcorp Mall Flea Market. Amcorp Mall free market open on Saturday and Sunday; from 9.00 am until 5.00 pm. The flea market of Amcorp Mall located in the mall at the lower ground and the 1st floor. The Amcorp Mall is a mall situated in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia, located opposite the Taman Jaya LRT station which is served by the Kelana Jaya Line, operated by Rapid KL. It is also located in the proximity of the Petaling Jaya Hilton Hotel and the Armada Hotel. This is one of the flea market recommended by most collector for antique, coin, vintage and collectables item. You can also found food item, dress, jewelery, craft and other stuff in this market.

I divided my Amcorp Mall Flea market into two post. The other post is about coin and antique item that can be found in this flea market. A collectable or collectible is typically a manufactured item designed for people to collect. In this respect, they are distinguishable from other subjects of collections, which may also include natural objects (e.g., butterflies) and objects manufactured for purposes other than collecting (e.g., stamps). Some objects designed for other purposes, such as toys, become so popular among collectors that they are later marketed specifically to that audience.

The earliest collectibles were included as incentives with other products, such as cigarette cards in packs of cigarettes. Popular items developed a secondary market and sometimes became the subject of "collectible crazes". Eventually many collectible items came to be sold separately, instead of being used as marketing tools to increase the appeal of other products. To encourage collecting, manufacturers often create an entire series of a given collectible, with each item differentiated in some fashion. Examples include sports cards depicting individual players, or different designs of Beanie Babies. Enthusiasts will often try to assemble a complete set of the available variations.

I don't know much about Collectables item price but I can see that you can find many collectibles item in Amcorp mall flea market. You can find stamps, toys, cassette, compact disk, LP records, old boxes, coca-cola item, Books, Magazine and many item that I don't ever think people will collect.
