Have you Met Your Double?

Did it already occur to you being in two places at the same time? Or perhaps have come face to face with your exact double? Probably you will wonder if this is possible in the first place. This may seem absurd and weird but this happens in real life. Any person can experience this unusual phenomenon but this could bring bad luck or could be a harbinger of death. There are many intriguing stories throughout history of people that have encountered their doubles or most popularly known as their Doppelgangers. Some of them say that whenever their doubles appear, they become physically weak, drained and fatigued. But some cases are worse as death and danger soon follows.

A “Doppelganger” is a German word for “double walker”─a shadow of self, a ghostly or in some cases, a physical double of a living person. The term may also refer to any look-alike of a person, specifically in reference to the so-called evil twin, or to bilocation─being in two places at exactly the same time.

By tradition, it is said that only the owner of the Doppelganger can see his own phantom self, and that this can be a bad omen like a forecast of his death, illness or health problems. But occasionally, a Doppelganger can also be seen by the person’s family, friends and relatives, creating quite a bit of confusion.

Here are some of the famous Doppelganger stories:
  • Guy de Maupassant, the French novelist and short story writer, claimed to have been haunted by his doppelganger near the end of his life. On one occasion, he said, this double entered his room, took a seat opposite him and began to dictate what de Maupassant was writing. He wrote about this experience in his short story "Lui."
  • John Donne, the 16th century English poet whose work often touched on the metaphysical, was visited by a doppelganger while he was in Paris - not his, but his wife's. She appeared to him holding a newborn baby. Donne's wife was pregnant at the time, but the apparition was a portent of great sadness. At the same moment that the doppelganger appeared, his wife had given birth to a stillborn child.
Percy Bysshe Shelley, still considered one of the greatest poets of the English language, encountered his doppelganger in Italy. The phantom silently pointed toward the Mediterranean Sea. Not long after, and shortly before his 30th birthday in 1822, Shelley died in a sailing accident - drowned in the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Queen Elizabeth I of England was shocked to see her doppelganger laid out on her bed. The queen died shortly thereafter.
  • In a case that suggests that doppelgangers might have something to do with time or dimensional shifts, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the 18th century German poet, confronted his doppelganger while riding on the road to Drusenheim. Riding toward him was his exact double, but wearing a gray suit trimmed in gold. Eight years later, von Goethe was again traveling on the same road, but in the opposite direction. He then realized he was wearing the very gray suit trimmed in gold that he had seen on his double eight years earlier! Had von Goethe seen his future self?

The theory that each of us has a double could be true. A common instance is when you met one day someone you know, like an old friend, you get to talk to him or her, exchange stories and bid each other good bye then later on, you saw the person again only to find out that he or she never saw you that day. Weird huh?

These days, some theorize that Doppelgangers are evidences of the various worlds of quantum physics. But whatever it is, either a forecast of danger or simply a paranormal experience, there is no way, even modern technologies, can control it.

BERMUDA TRIANGLE: A Journey to Mystery

Probably you have already heard about the Bermuda Triangle. This is among the greatest mysteries here on earth that is still left unresolved, though we are supposedly in a well understood world. This region lies in the Atlantic Ocean, between Bermuda, Miami, Florida, San Juan and Puerto Rico. It does not have an absolute location because of its huge scope, wherein it lies in between 80-90 degrees west and 30-20 degrees north. This region is famous for the disappearances of about 66 airplanes and ships. What makes this region enigmatic is the fact that none, not even one of the vanished ships and planes had been found. These disappearances have mystified many, allowing them to formulate and propound many versions that would explain what happened to the missing travelers. This had caused many exotic theories that intend to unveil what really lies beneath the Bermuda Triangle.

The mysterious disappearances of ships, aircrafts and people have been attributed to the machinations of gigantic sea monsters, huge squids, extra terrestrials, alien abduction, the existence of a third dimension, and ocean flatulence. All these are suggested to be the culprits but are merely masterpieces of wild imaginations.

In reality, the disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle are far more prosaic. Some argue that the treacherous mother nature, poor engineering and design of ships and planes, human error, and just plain bad luck can explain it all. But how can one explain that among the many disappearances, none was found. Remains, traces, and even a slight tinge of evidence on the lost ships and planes-no clue were found. With this intriguing, I should say “phenomenon”, many are interested in discovering the answer.

Viable theories that will explain the mystery behind Bermuda Triangle have been introduced. One of these theories had claimed that the role of methane gas hydrate was responsible for the weird occurrence. This was introduced by Richard Mclver. His theory points out that, in the North of Bermuda Triangle, massive landslides occur in the continental shelf. This had caused large stones and sludge to fall down to the sea floor and destructively rupturing the sea floor, which covers the layer of gas hydrate. Once the sea floor had ruptured, the hydrate is released rapidly as well as its methane content. As a result, a huge surge of gas erupts from the surface of water. This can happen without any warning. When this occurs, any ship, plane or tangible object within the vicinity will be in instant danger. This is because the water and air no longer have the same density. This is what causes the ship to sink and immediately covered by sludge on the ocean floor.

While this theory may sound feasible, still, it is only a theory-no concrete evidence or whatsoever that will prove it right. Some still believe that something not otherworldly or more extraordinary are the culprits of these strange events. Others think that it is a portal to another world. But whatever it is that causes mystery to the Bermuda Triangle, you be the judge-is it a fact or only a fiction?

Trivias on Human Body

Thanks to Funology.com. I've found these following trivias really interesting.

  • The dust on rugs and your furniture is not only dirt. It’s mostly made of dead skin cells. Everybody loses millions of skin cells every day which fall on the floor and get kicked up to land on all the surfaces in a room. You could say, "That’s me all over."
  • The width of your armspan stretched out is the length of your whole body.
  • You blink your eyes over 10,000,000 a year.
  • The longest bout of hiccups lasted 69 years!
  • Your fingernails grow almost four times as fast as your toenails.
  • Your tongue has 3,000 taste buds.
  • A human's small intestine is 6 meters long.
  • Can you feel the pulse in your wrist? For humans the normal pulse is 70 heartbeats per minute. Elephants have a slower pulse of 27 and for a canary it is 1000!
  • In one day your heart beats 100,000 times.
  • Coughing can cause air to move through your windpipe faster than the speed of sound — over a thousand feet per second!
  • Germs only cause disease, right? But a common bacterium, E. Coli, found in the intestine helps us digest green vegetables and beans (also making gases – pew!). These same bacteria also make vitamin K, which causes blood to clot. If we didn’t have these germs we would bleed to death whenever we got a small cut!

Accelerated Aging

Don’t you know that there is a certain disease that could speed-up aging? I’m not talking about normal “rapid aging” here, but prematurely aging beginning in childhood. This disease is called Progeria. Also known as Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome, Progeria is a rare condition by which its symptoms greatly resemble the normal aging of humans, but attack young children. It is an illness that causes the sufferer to age twice the normal rate. This disease appears within the first year of life. Children suffering from this condition may show prevalent abnormalities like baldness, dwarfism, narrow face, dry and scaly skin, a pinched nose, limited range of motion, large head size or face and delayed teeth growth or absent formation. As the disease progresses, they may develop other complications like stiff joints, atherosclerosis that may cause strokes and heart problems, hip dislocations and other conditions that normal elders also experience.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for this disease and all the doctors can do is supplement children suffering from this illness with the necessary vitamins, prescribe proper intake diet and relieve their discomforts. An average patient may live past their early teens but some can live up to 30 years.

An Unusual and Obscure English Word

Take a deep breath and utter this ‘simple’ word “Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia”. Have you recited it correctly? Well, probably no. I also had a hard time pronouncing correctly this tongue-tiring word. I have found it out of curiosity. This real weird English word is not easy to say, but ironically, it is a medical term for the fear of long words. The word itself will drive you nuts and even scare those who don’t have ‘skilled, talented and flexible’ tongues. But for those people who have manic fear of long words, maybe reading this word “Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia” on and on will help them get over with their fear.

This 15-syllable word is not basically used purely for its meaning but rather, the term
sesquipedaliophobia is used in formal writing and discussions. It is intentionally presented in an exaggerated length of words so as to accentuate the idea of fearing the word itself.
